I have developed an understanding with the bunnies and bullfrogs in my garden due to necessity. This year I doubted my ability to grow anything from seed so what did I do? I planted double the amount of seeds inside the house in March thinking half would die off. And you know what happened next, right? Yep, nearly everything germinated because I took care to keep the seeds hydrated, warm and (this is key) covered!
I was learning and did not even trust my own knowledge. I had even gone back to using Territorial Seed Company Seeds as I had a bunch from unsuccessful years and wanted to really give them a chance. Bingo – it was me, not the seeds that had failed in the past.
Bunnies and Bullfrogs Like it Cool
In my neighborhood I am regularly watering both my yard and my garden so the garden flourishes and is cool with big zucchini leaves and tall tomato plants reaching for the sun. My burning bush has grown nicely, the raspberry bush just produced its first fruit after 2 years and I have a water station near the butterfly bush. Let’s just say I planned this better than I thought in the beginning. I thought my decisions were a bit random – but all is good. Except for a small space near the watering area.
On more than one occasion I found a bunny sleeping on this flat spot of dirt sort of hidden and in the morning when I went out back to have my coffee, it darted away. I didn’t think much of this, but I do believe he visits that spot more than I realized.
Homes for Pepper Starts
When I had to repot my growing pepper plant hoard (see first paragraph where I over seeded things) I was happy to put a pepper plant in that “vacant” spot in the garden. “Perfect!” I said to myself – great location – sun and shade too.
Not so fast though, yes, you are figuring this out huh? The next day I woke up to find that my pepper plant had been yanked out of its new spot! Tossed in a heap nearby, it was wilting. The cucumbers were doing fine as they have a strong vine system the bunnies won’t mess up. But I immediately thought that it was interfering with the sleeping bunny situation. Oops, so far the bunnies have not munched on my plants. They sometimes use my garden to play and rest, so I should keep it that way.
I found a new home for the pepper plant. I’m keeping that flat space for my bunny friends. I mentioned the bullfrogs because they announce themselves when it rains. They are loud! “I’m over here! Over here mate! Where’s Joe? Dang this rain is da bomb!” We all must live in harmony. I had no idea how many bullfrogs hung out near my property. When it rained hard 2 weeks ago and last Monday it was very loud in the backyard!
I hope your garden delights you this much! We all must live in harmony. Bunnies and bullfrogs are welcome in my small garden plot. I should mention here that there are certain items I planted using elevated or raised beds that bunnies and bullfrogs cannot get to and I do not use any chemicals or pesticides so I feel like my friendly visitors like the natural element to my yard in general.
Knowing I’ve got space for wildlife in the area makes me happy! I always leave fresh water out for birds, squirrels and bunnies. The bullfrogs already have their water source figured out. Happy Gardening! – Gina
